Trafalgar
Square published its first horse book — Centered Riding by Sally
Swift, who lives in Brattleboro, Vermont — in 1985 and the book
remains one of the best-selling horse books of all time. It was this book
that provided the spark that led Trafalgar Square’s owners, Ted
and Caroline Robbins, to start up a horse book publishing business. Why
horse books? Because the Robbins were, and still are, horse owners and
riders. In the 1980s, they became acquainted with Sally Swift through
a circle of riding friends and Sally taught them both at their farm in
North Pomfret, Vermont where farming (cattle and horses) co-exists with
the book publishing today. When Sally began thinking of publishing her
work, it made perfect sense for her to turn to Caroline. Caroline was
already operating a successful book distribution outlet for British publishers
so starting up her own publishing list made good sense. Together, Sally
and Caroline brought Centered Riding to life and the book became the foundation
of Trafalgar Square’s publishing program.
Since its modest beginnings
in 1985, Trafalgar Square has published over 85 horse books and its list
continues to grow, incorporating titles on dressage, jumping, training,
western riding, horse care, driving and more. Besides books, Trafalgar
Square has also ventured into video, dvd, and audio publishing, and has
released 28 instructional videotapes and dvds and three audiotapes on
equestrian subjects.
Trafalgar Square is
very proud of its many talented authors. Those who have joined the Trafalgar
Square list over the years include: Jane Savoie, Linda Tellington-Jones,
William Steinkraus, Mary Wanless, Clinton Anderson, Charles de Kunffy,
Sylvia Loch, Richard Shrake, Betsy Steiner, Kyra Kyrklund, Alois Podhajsky,
Paul Belasik, Jessica Jahiel, to name but a few.
Besides its own publications,
Trafalgar Square also is the exclusive United States distributor of the
highly respected British equestrian publisher, J.A. Allen, Ltd. The J.A.
Allen titles can also be found on this Web site.
