Janice Dulak—dancer, teacher, choreographer and Master Instructor for Romana’s Pilates®—has trained in Pilates since 1989 when a knee injury threatened to end her performing career. With improved body condition gained by Pilates, Janice continued to dance and teach internationally. While serving as Chair of the Dance Department at Stephens College, Janice was certified in Pilates in 1993, and opened her first Pilates studio in Columbia, MO. In 2001 she was asked by Romana Kryzanowska, heir to the Pilates Method, to become a Master Instructor and has been teaching at the International Romana’s Pilates Conferences yearly since then.

Janice has been riding dressage since 1995 and won a Gold Medal at First Level at the 2000 Show Me State Games. Working toward second level proved more difficult and although she had many qualified dressage instructors, she found that something was missing in the dressage training: the teaching of the body. As a dancer, Janice could do just about anything with her leg; therefore, when instructed to “use your leg,” she found this description too vague. This inspired her to write her first book, Pilates for the Dressage Rider, which was first published in 2006. In this book, Janice thoroughly explained the basics of The Pilates Method and how it can help riders improve their ability to use the body for better riding. From this book, her work was then published in a companion DVD and has continued to grow into Pilates for Dressage®, a method of training riders which she teaches in clinics throughout the country. Most notably, Janice has personally taught Linda Parelli and also team teaches with USDF Gold Medalist and certified instructor, Sarah Martin.

Janice continues to ride dressage and trains regularly with Jochen Hippenstiel. She earned a 68.6% with her homebred Oldenburg gelding Rubaiyat at the FEI 4 year old test in 2006. She and Ruby are now competing at 2nd level (after a six-year hiatus from showing) and in their first outing, earned her third score toward her USDF bronze medal.

Janice’s studio, The Dulak Pilates Center, located in Champaign, IL, is a Pilates training center and is the center where she will be certifying apprentice in Pilates for Dressage®. She lives with her husband, three horses and myriad cats at Amber Waves Farm.
