Dressage
in Lightness: Speaking the Horse’s Language is Sylvia's
fifth major equestrian book. Her first book, The Royal Horse of
Europe, was published in 1986 to international acclaim, earning
the title "Book of the Year" in Horse and Hound. There followed The Classical Seat, Dressage: The Art Of Classical Riding,
and Classical Rider, all of which have either gone on
into further editions or been translated into French and German, each
enjoying a prominent place in the world's most prestigious book lists.
Apart from her writing,
Sylvia is probably best known for her teaching, lecturing, and videos.
She has given clinics and seminars all over the world, including the United
States, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Kenya, while her videos, The Classical Seat series I, II, and III, are available
globally on the internet as well as in retail outlets. In 1982 Sylvia
co-founded The Lusitano Breed Society of Great Britain, and in 1995 formed
The Classical Riding Club (CRC), a networking organization whose 800 members
are scattered both at home and abroad, with a large contingent in the
USA. For members the ideals promoted by the CRC within its charter, and
in its quarterly newsletters, keep the spirit of traditional classical
dressage alive in a very unique way.
